Charles Phillips Oracle co-president for over 29 quarters, was replaced by none other than Mark Hurd, a close friend of Oracle’s CEO Lawrence J. Ellison and the former CEO of Oracle’s competitor, Hewlett-Packard. IBM or the International Business Machines Corporation, together with SAP, are the only two companies who have better rankings than Oracle in the software industry.

Last June 2010, the company enjoyed a 14% increase in its new software sales, which is considered to be an indicator that Oracle is well on its way to accomplishing even bigger gains. The firm’s quarterly profits were also bigger than Street projections. All in all, analysts like Forrester’s James Staten believe that Hurd’s expertise and hardware background will be key to Oracle’s ability to beat its long-time competitor IBM. Staten, however, also pointed out that the company would enjoy interesting organizational dynamics with strong personalities such as Hurd and Ellison leading Oracle to the future.
